More than ever, the security of our jobs and businesses has become more crucial. In my research, I found that (sometimes) people miss out on the next level career position or business opportunity not for lack of talent but for lack of proficiency in small details. Some may consider and judge these details as little. However, these unassuming details go a long way in job security, establishing unforgettable first or lasting impressions. Here are a few tips to inch you closer to success and job security.

  1. Communication: If there is one skill that opens or shuts more doors than others, it's the skill of communication. It's one thing to speak. It's another to speak well. Investing in speaking well is crucial if you want to communicate your value, secure your job or move up the ladder. This point requires a whole chapter. However, for now, I wish to leave you one of the many habits that have helped me. It's the habit of finding a way to communicate positively. For instance, rather than share what you CAN'T do, share what you CAN do. Alternatively, beginning any communication on a positive note is always a great idea. (More on this later)

  2. Handling: Do you handle people and situations well? Do you make room for others, their strengths and their struggles? Are you considerate and mindful? Many people are overwhelmed with personal challenges in our busy world. Remember that your colleagues or clients are human and desire to be understood and seen. Learning to handle people with care can expedite your progress if you want to advance in your business or career and be potentially included on the "do not lay off" list.

  3. Networking: Be known for value or be forgotten and overlooked. While meeting people and a name badge is printed or written, consider wearing your name badge over your upper left chest area. Why? Wearing a sticky or pin name badge on the upper left side makes it easy for the other person(s) to access and recall your name when they shake your right hand. If you are provided a lanyard, wearing one at the center of your body facing forward communicates readiness.

  4. Neatness: Did you know that wearing wrinkled, unironed clothing communicates a lack of preparation, organization and attention to detail? Arriving at your appointments with well-pressed garments and your papers neatly placed in your document holder or planner amplifies you are ready for business.

  5. Consistency: Consistency is a goal most of us are familiar with yet struggle to apprehend. Being consistent tells others around you that you are a person of value and are always prepared to add value. Consistency is like making daily deposits into a bank. The more you do it, the more your account value grows. The next time you feel out of it, remind yourself that not showing up takes away from adding to your daily value.

Until next time, let's stay polished.
