Before founding NOTIQ five years ago this weekend, I led a luxury wedding and event company for almost two decades. One of the highlights of my career was designing and producing exquisite invitations and stationery for discerning clients seeking to capture the full attention of their guests and leave an unforgettable impression. I kid you not when I say these invitations were beyond remarkable. They were unsurpassed! Every detail was carefully planned in collaboration with my client.

One key role I played was helping my clients plan out the details of their events and determining the most appropriate attire to request on the invitations. 

There are several reasons why dressing the part matters.

Event hosts and hostesses want their guests to:

  1. Be confident, safe and feel comfortable.

  2. Meet cultural traditions or religious significance.

  3. Achieve visual and group harmony.

  4. Regard and respect their sincere wishes.

  5. Create a lasting memory to enjoy for a lifetime.

In my (humble) opinion, planning your attire should accompany planning your time. Why? Showing up in the proper attire goes a long way and says a lot about who you are, what you value, how you regard others and how you want to be remembered. 

Today, let's review popular dress codes for social and dining events and what they mean.

  1. Casual Dining: Locations include cafes, eateries, informal family-style diners and restaurants. Consider wearing comfortable garments, including jeans, casual slacks, t-shirts and casual blouses.

  2. Business Casual: Also known as Informal - This dress code applies to work meetings, meet-ups and many after-hours events. Consider wearing a day dress, a blouse, a blazer, or a cardigan over dressy pants or a skirt. 

  3. Semi-Formal: The expectation is to show up a bit more dressy. Arrive nicely in a cocktail dress or suit.

  4. Formal: The expectation is FORMAL with elegant pantsuits, long or midi dresses, dress suits, formal accessories and complimenting shoes.

  5. White Tie: This is the crème de la crème of formal dining and events. The expectation is floor-length gowns and black jackets with coats and pants.

One great idea is to review this dress code list above and see if you have what it takes to pull off each look should you receive an invitation to any.
