How To Scale Up Your Professional Value
The one quick and sure way.
What if you were the most valuable person everywhere you went? I mean, what if you were the person who added the most value in every room you entered? What if you were the name that comes to mind when authentic value is required?
Periodically, I get the opportunity to teach and share valuable insights with professionals and entrepreneurs on how to stand out at work or in business. Following one of my sessions, a student requested my help preparing for what she named the most significant presentation of her career. She was meeting with key decision-makers and C-suite members of her company. She needed my help putting together a presentation that would impress them for a new role she was eyeing, with steep competition.
As we settled into our prep meeting, she told me she was looking to create several "powerful" slides with beautiful graphics and charts. It didn't take long for her to observe that I wasn't too excited about her plan.
There was only one question on my mind:
What does this group need right now?
I asked my student to let go of her impressive 25-page slide idea and focus on answering the question I posed on a maximum of three slides. In her scenario, I helped her to understand that the senior management's most pressing needs are cutting costs and growing profitability.
The rest, they say, is history.
My student returned from her presentation with whistles, bells, and a hat on. 🤩 She aced her presentation, stood out, beat her competition, and commanded the full attention of senior management. She was the only one that added matchless value.
In life and work, we often project our value (share what we think) rather than serve our value (understand what is needed).
